A former detective from the Gangnamseo Police Station in Seoul has been indicted on charges of accepting bribes from operators of the virtual asset QBZ (Queen Bitcoin) project. The indictment alleges that the former police officer, identified only as "A," received approximately 10 million won (US$8,000) worth of goods from Queen Bitcoin's actual operator, Mr. Lee, and its representative, Mr. Lee, in exchange for conducting a favorable investigation into their operations. Mr. Lee and Mr. Lee are currently on trial for a separate 30 billion won (US$24 million) fraud case related to Queen Bitcoin. Their first trial is scheduled for January 15, 2023. The indictment against the former detective is the latest development in a series of investigations into alleged corruption involving virtual asset companies in South Korea. In recent months, several other police officers and government officials have been indicted on similar charges. The Queen Bitcoin case has also raised concerns about the lack of regulation in the virtual asset industry in South Korea. The government has been working on new regulations to address these concerns, but it is unclear when they will be implemented.
