Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a 35-year-old man from Springfield, Virginia, has been charged for donating cryptocurrency to the terrorist organization, ISIS. According to the DOJ, Chhipa sent $185,000 worth of cryptocurrencies to ISIS members in Syria between October 2019 and October 2022. Court records confirmed that Chhipa sent crypto to female terrorist members for various purposes, including financing their escape from prison camps and supporting ISIS fighters.

The funds were raised through social media accounts, electronic bank transfers and in-person cash collections. The illicit funds were converted to cryptocurrency and sent to Turkey before being smuggled to ISIS members in Syria. Chhipa’s primary co-conspirator was a British-born ISIS member residing in Syria who was also raising funds for prison escapes, terrorist attacks, and ISIS fighters.

Chhipa has been convicted on five counts and could face up to 100 years in prison.
