Influencer Squirrel Peanut's owner Mark Longo, dissatisfied with the cryptocurrency exchange Binance's unauthorized use of the $PNUT trademark, has issued a cease-and-desist letter to Binance through a law firm.
According to a legal letter shared by Mark Longo earlier yesterday (the 16th), Binance has unauthorized use of several intellectual properties, including the '$PNUT trademark' and 'cowboy hat squirrel image', on the trading interface for the meme coin $PNUT.
The legal letter states that Mark Longo has been using the $PNUT related trademark in the United States since April 2017, primarily for educational and charitable activities related to animal protection, wildlife, and nature conservation. If the infringement is proven to be 'willful infringement', the compensation amount for each infringement could be as high as $150,000.
The lawyer has demanded that Binance respond and cease all infringing activities by December 31.
Mark Longo pointed out in his post, 'My legal team has taken action against Binance for their unauthorized use of the animal images and stories I created,' and he emphasized:
This is just the first cease-and-desist notice; there will be more actions to follow. I will do everything in my power to protect my creations and convey a clear message: unauthorized use of my intellectual property will not be tolerated.
However, netizens have not fully bought into it and have instead harshly criticized Mark Longo, accusing him of profiting from his pet's fame 'over and over again'. Some netizens bluntly stated:
You have already rug pulled 5 different contracts, siphoning off millions of dollars. We have gathered evidence, and everyone knows you are a fraud.
Moreover, some netizens, after checking the official records, harshly criticized: 'You have never registered the $PNUT or cowboy hat squirrel trademark.'
Some have angrily accused Mark Longo of 'exploiting the death of his pet to gain sympathy and money from fans,' even describing his actions as 'a disgrace to human civilization.'
Additionally, some netizens claimed to have video evidence, accusing Mark Longo of repeatedly promoting 'pump and dump' cryptocurrency projects, only to abandon them and then launch new tokens to raise money, harshly calling him 'the real king of scamming fans.'
With Mark Longo waving the legal banner, can he truly shake Binance? Or is the backlash from netizens the real truth? Let’s wait and see.
