The Real Digital, the Brazilian digital currency under development by the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB)
It uses an infrastructure based on distributed ledger technology (DLT). In the testing (pilot) phase, known as the Drex project (formerly "Digital Real Project"), the Central Bank chose to use the Hyperledger Besu blockchain, a permissioned blockchain implementation based on Ethereum.
This choice allows the network to be private, with pre-authorized participants, ensuring greater control and security, essential characteristics for a national financial system.
However, the main focus of Real Digital is not to be a decentralized cryptocurrency like Bitcoin or Ethereum, but rather a central bank digital currency (CBDC), integrated into the traditional financial system, with purposes such as:
