One of the crypto industry’s moguls, Justin Sun, has been making headlines in recent days. But not for his achievements in the sector, but for eating a banana from a $6.2 million work of art. He is the founder of TRON and CEO of Poloniex.
Called Comedian, Maurizio Cattelan's work gained international fame in 2019, when it was exhibited for the first time at Art Basel Miami.

Work with banana generated controversy and gained fame around the world
Its simplicity and absurdity — a banana taped to a wall — sparked debate, especially about the nature of art. The piece went viral again when performance artist David Datuna ate it in a Hungry Artist show. He said at the time in New York that he was “the first artist to eat another artist’s art.”
Sun's promise to eat the $6.2 million fruit also sparked rumors, adding another layer of humor to the play's story. The Tron founder even said he is willing to donate the banana to Elon Musk and send it to Mars.
Sun eats the fruit and says it is “much better than other bananas”
It is much better than other bananas. Eating it at a conference can also become part of the history of the work of art, Sun said.
So Sun ate the banana under the watchful eyes of several journalists at an event in Hong Kong.

Banana cost US$0.25
During last week’s auction, Sotheby’s revealed that seven buyers or their representatives competed for the “Comedian.” The starting price of $800,000 soared to $5.2 million, reaching $6.2 million with commissions when the item was finally sold. The banana eaten by SUN cost just $0.25.
In fact, this is not the first time that Sun has attracted attention. In 2021, the CEO of TRON 3 purchased the sculpture “The Nose”, by Alberto Giacometti, for US$78.4 million
Banana Gun Stable Token
The Banana Gun token, which soared 16% on the day Sun purchased the artwork, is now trading near stability at $67.23.
Famous Banana
Its initial appearance [in 2019] drew record crowds, divided viewers and critics, and caused so much pandemonium that it had to be removed from the site before the exhibition closed. Widely revered and hotly contested — and eaten not once, but twice — the work made headlines in venues around the world, Sotheby’s wrote.
The head of contemporary art at the world's most famous auction house, David Galperin, says the work is profound and provocative.
What Cattelan is really doing is holding up a mirror to the contemporary art world and asking thought-provoking questions about how we attribute value to works of art, what we define as a work of art.
