?? The open interest in Bitcoin continues to reach new historical highs, is greater volatility coming?

CryptoQuant's analyst Maartunn pointed out in a recent X post that the volume of Bitcoin-related derivatives positions has been increasing lately. Simply put, more and more new positions are being opened on exchanges.

Typically, when this happens, the overall leverage in the industry tends to spike, which may lead to increased price volatility of the assets. Conversely, if the indicator declines, it indicates that investors are either actively choosing to close their positions or being forced to liquidate by the platform. However, as leverage decreases, the cryptocurrency market trends may gradually stabilize.

From the chart below, it can be seen that the trend indicator for Bitcoin's open interest has been on the rise over the past few months, and it has particularly surged recently.

The rapid growth of this indicator is usually associated with a surge in Bitcoin's price, which has also been continuously breaking historical records during this period. This situation is not unexpected, as sharp price fluctuations attract a lot of attention and intensify speculative behavior on exchanges.

However, the magnitude of the increase in this indicator is also concerning. Historically, when Bitcoin's open interest increases too much, it often leads to large-scale liquidation events ("squeezes"). Price volatility can instantaneously liquidate a large number of excessively leveraged positions, creating a feedback loop that amplifies price fluctuations and leads to more liquidations.

Theoretically, the volatility generated by squeezes can cause cryptocurrency prices to move in any direction, but during bullish periods, an overheated derivatives market often leads to BTC price corrections, as long positions tend to accumulate when prices rise.

In recent days, although there has been a decrease in the cumulative amount of open interest, at the beginning of the new week, speculators seem to be becoming active again, and the relevant indicators have also shown a rebound trend.

However, the future trend of Bitcoin is still unclear, and it is difficult to predict whether another large-scale liquidation event (squeeze) will occur. Its market performance is worth our close attention.
