Controversial figure Justin Sun spent $6.24 million on a banana taped to the wall.
During the auction, auctioneer Oliver Buck called the work "iconic" and "subversive," and joked: "Auctioning a banana is something I never thought I would say."
Soon after the auction, Sotheby's revealed that the controversial Chinese collector and founder of the cryptocurrency platform Justin Sun bought the work.
"This is more than just a work of art. It represents a cultural phenomenon that spans the art, meme and cryptocurrency communities," Sun said in a press release. "I believe this work will inspire more thinking and discussion in the future and become part of history."
Buyers get more than just tape and bananas, but also a certificate of authenticity and official installation instructions for the work.
Sotheby's previously confirmed to CNN that neither the tape nor the banana auctioned in this auction are original versions. $BTC
