South Korean police confirmed that North Korean-backed hacker groups Lazarus and Andariel stole 342,000 Ethereum from Upbit, the country's largest cryptocurrency exchange, in 2019.
According to local news agency Yonhap, South Korean police officials stated that the Lazarus and Andariel groups, which are affiliated with North Korea's Reconnaissance General Bureau, infiltrated the Upbit exchange in November 2019 and carried out a major hack.
Police announced that 57% of the stolen Ethereum$ETH
was converted and exchanged for Bitcoin at very low prices through three cryptocurrency exchanges operated by North Korea. It was stated that the remaining Ethereum was laundered by distributing it to 51 different global exchanges.
South Korean police also announced that some of the stolen assets were found on a Swiss-based trading platform in October 2020 and that they recovered 4.8 BTC and returned it to the Upbit exchange in October of this year.
