From zoos to artists to AI, the winds of hype are finally blowing at Desci. DeSci is an unproven track, and tokens have taken off first. What exactly is DeSci, and what novel tokens are worthy of attention?
What is DeSci?
DeSci stands for Decentralized Science. According to the Ethereum Foundation, “DeSci is a movement to build a fair public infrastructure in the scientific research industry by using the Web3 stack to fund, create, review, validate, store and disseminate scientific knowledge.”
DeSci's goal is to use the advantages of blockchain technology to solve challenges in traditional scientific research, such as difficulties in raising funds, insufficient data sharing, and low research transparency, thereby accelerating scientific discovery and innovation. At present, projects are mainly focused on solving financing problems, and most of them focus on the biotechnology industry. According to Messari Research's review of the DeSci track, it is mainly classified into: financing, research, data, peer review, publishing, infrastructure and services, art, scientific open ecology, and community.
The explosion of DeSci in meme coins has a traceable origin. In December last year, the DeSci narrative gained attention due to mention by CZ and the founding of ResearchHub by Coinbase's founders. Recently, V God reiterated this, Binance invested in BIO, and on-chain sentiment is high, with DeSci creating continuous fast-track markets.
Token overview
RIF
RIF comes from the Pump.science platform, representing the compound rifamycin (RIF). Pump Science is a meme launch platform launched by the Solana ecosystem DeSci platform Molecule DAO, which can be understood as a token-based lifespan extension experimental prediction game. Currently, the platform only has RIF and URO tokens.
RIF is traditionally known as rifampicin, belonging to the rifamycin class of antibiotics, primarily used to treat different types of infections caused by various bacteria. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis to treat infections and is one of the main drugs for treating tuberculosis, usually combined with other anti-tuberculosis medications. However, rifampicin has little effect on non-bacterial issues (such as aging or mitochondrial dysfunction). In a previous round of trials, the antibiotic RIF extended the lifespan of worms by 32.87%.

URO
URO also comes from the Pump.science platform, representing the compound Uroceras, which extended lifespan by 6.35% in the last round of trials. Its potential effects include promoting autophagy and improving mitochondrial function, which are crucial for cellular health and anti-aging. By enhancing the repair of cells and clearing damaged cellular components, Uroceras A may positively impact the long-term survival of cells. Under laboratory conditions, if the aging or cell damage of an organism can be repaired through this mechanism, it theoretically has the potential to extend the lifespan of the organism, having significant implications for delaying aging or improving health status.

SCIHUB
SCI-HUB is a concept related to scientific donations. SCI-HUB is a platform that allows free querying and downloading of papers. It is currently controversial, with supporters arguing that it provides free access to papers for scholars and students worldwide, breaking the monopoly of scientific publishers, and representing decentralized science. Critics argue that SCI-HUB is a piracy site that circumvents publishers' paywalls using various methods, providing millions of academic papers and works without regard for copyright issues, thus raising concerns about piracy compliance.

VITA belongs to the DeSci DAO, focusing primarily on longevity research and financing, having raised over 5 million dollars. Its main area is concentrated in Europe, supported by Molecule in its creation. It establishes a portfolio of intellectual property and data assets, which are publicized and tokenized through data markets or traditional biopharmaceutical licensing and commercialization processes. The goal of VitaDAO is to shorten the funding decision lifecycle quickly; attract leading researchers through promoting open science principles; and democratize ownership.
