$BNB In 1956, during the Cold War, one of the most exciting espionage operations in history was uncovered, Operation Overcast, run by the Soviet Union. The Soviets recruited a high-ranking American scientist working on the American nuclear bomb project, as part of a very sophisticated espionage operation.
This scientist, Klaus Fuchs, was able to pass on highly sensitive secrets about the design of the hydrogen bomb to the Soviets. Thanks to this information, the Soviet Union was able to conduct its first successful test of its nuclear bomb in 1949, years before the West had expected.
This breakthrough completely changed the global balance of power, and led to a nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union, which threatened world peace for years.
What is even more exciting is that Fuchs was not discovered until the early 1950s, which means that nuclear secrets had been leaking for years without the knowledge of the United States, and all of this was happening behind the scenes at the heart of America's most secret project!
