Zero-knowledge (ZK) proofs have created controversy in the crypto industry for decentralized identity applications. Some argue that ZK is expensive and complex. Leo Fan, co-founder of Cysic, stated that while ZK proofs have historically been expensive, they are more cost-effective than traditional identity systems operated by centralized institutions.
Fan explained that the cost and finality time of ZK proofs have decreased significantly due to hardware developments and more efficient proof generation. The generation time of ZK proofs is now around 10 seconds, making ZK a viable method for decentralized identity verification.
The provision of ZK-powered digital IDs to 3.6 million people in Buenos Aires and the integration of iris scanning devices into Malaysia’s official ID system through Worldcoin are accelerating ZK’s global adoption. We welcome your comments.
