Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, has taken an important step to enhance the privacy and security of its residents. Recently, the city launched QuarkID, a significant digital identity service that harnesses the power of zero-knowledge proofs (ZK proofs).

This innovative technology is rooted in cryptography and embedded into the existing miBA app. QuarkID empowers the city’s 3.6 million residents with greater control over their personal information.

A New Dawn for Personal Privacy in Buenos Aires

The core mission behind QuarkID is to enable residents to authenticate essential documents without exposing unnecessary personal details.

In a press statement, Diego Fernandez, Buenos Aires’ Secretary of Innovation and Digital Transformation, reiterated that QuarkID was built to allow residents to retain data ownership. He disclosed that this initiative aimed to reduce the risk of identity theft.

Interestingly, QuarkID is designed to allow users to upload over 60 document types, including birth certificates, tax certificates, vaccination records, and more.

Importantly, neither third parties nor the government can access or track these documents.

In addition, the system is free for users and offers substantial savings for the government compared to traditional document management methods. This makes it a win-win solution for both residents and local authorities.

Several Web3 and country organizations, including the Worldcoin Foundation, Qubetics, Monero, and AllianceBlock, have launched privacy and security-focused initiatives.

The Magic of ZK Proofs

Zero-knowledge proofs, the technology behind QuarkID, are not reliant on blockchain technology, but they offer an interesting way to protect privacy. QuarkID is smartly integrated with the Ethereum layer-2 network called ZKsync Era.

This blockchain serves as a security anchor, ensuring that data stays unchanged and can be verified over time. The city chose to leverage this blockchain due to its integrity and authenticity of users’ credentials.

In 2023, European Union legislators considered using ZK proofs for Digital IDs in the region. This underscores that ZK proof is a viable technology for improving privacy and security.

QuarkID to Expand Digital Identity Across Argentina

According to Fernandez, QuarkID will not only be available in Buenos Aires. He disclosed that the city is testing the service in places like Jujuy, TucumĂĄn, and LujĂĄn de Cuyo.

He also mentioned that experiments are happening in other Latin American countries, such as Uruguay. This comes as the country considers the benefits of using zero-knowledge proofs and digital identity services. Remarkably, Buenos Aires is setting an example for digital innovation that focuses on privacy and gives power to citizens throughout the region.
