• You probably know good old ChatGPT; you probably know great chatbots like Claude, Reka and Meta AI. But there is a very good chatbot that you may have missed: it's free, open source and more capable than ChatGPT in some tasks (image generation, document analysis, video editing, etc.).

HuggingChat is an open source alternative to ChatGPT. It is created by the team behind Hugging Face, a platform already beloved by open source #AI researchers and developers. If you're looking for an AI you can chat with without worrying about paywalls, cumbersome account registration, or where your data goes, HuggingChat offers just that.

Unlike the usual suspects, HuggingChat allows users to choose from a variety of open source AI models to generate text: Llama 3.1 70B, Nvidia's Nemotron 70B (which outperformed GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet in some tests), Llama 3.2 Vision, and Cohere's Command R Plus (designed for tasks involving conversational interaction and long contexts), and supports the top eight open source AI models.

On the surface, both HuggingChat and ChatGPT appear to have similar capabilities. They are designed for everything from casual conversations to in-depth technical assistance. However, dig a little deeper and you'll notice some significant differences.

The first thing we analyzed is the versatility of text features of both chatbots: in HuggingChat, the user can choose from eight different LLMs created by different developers with different technologies and usage scenarios in mind. For example, Nemotron is ideal for complex reasoning tasks, while Llama 3.1 is perfect for creative writing.

ChatGPT Plus users, on the other hand, can choose from OpenAI models based on company guidelines and writing styles. Currently, users can only choose between the more creative GPT-4o model and OpenAI o1, which focuses on reasoning skills.

Another feature is assistants, which are similar to OpenAI's custom GPTs but should be considered more flexible. These assistants act as specialized agents that perform a variety of tasks, from casual conversations to more narrow AI queries.
