Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Supports GOP Senate Candidate

Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brian Armstrong has endorsed several Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate in the November election.

Armstrong took to social media platform X on Oct. 20 to express support for pro-crypto Senate candidates, including pro-XRP (XRP) attorney John Deaton and former Bridgewater Associates CEO David McCormick.

Both candidates are running under the Republican Party banner, with Deaton running for a Senate seat in Massachusetts and McCormick in Pennsylvania.

Cryptocurrency incentives for support

“If you live in Pennsylvania, you should vote for David McCormick. He’s the better candidate on crypto,” Coinbase wrote, resharing an X poll that showed stronger support for the Republican candidate.

In another post on X on October 20, the Coinbase CEO also endorsed Deaton, a Republican challenger seeking to unseat Democratic U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who is known for her skeptical views on cryptocurrencies.

Armstrong argued that Warren “is the one” who appointed Gary Gensler to the position of Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission and “encouraged him to try to destroy the cryptocurrency industry” in the United States.

“Fortunately, they were unsuccessful as we and others fought back,” Armstrong added:

“She is anti-liberal, thinks the government should run all financial services (similar to China), and has done great harm to this country.”

Coinbase CEO Hasn't Endorsed Presidential Candidate Yet

While he has endorsed Republican Senate candidates, Armstrong has yet to endorse a presidential candidate.

In August, Armstrong reportedly stated that the next US administration would be “positive” for cryptocurrencies regardless of who wins.

“Cryptocurrency advocates are making their voices heard as a critical constituency. Politicians on both sides of the aisle have recognized this and there is strong momentum building to pass more comprehensive crypto legislation,” he said.

One of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States, Coinbase, was previously known for its “apolitical” stance.

In 2020, Armstrong published a blog post titled “Coinbase is a mission-focused company,” emphasizing the importance of the company focusing on its mission of advancing the future of cryptocurrency and staying away from political issues.

However, the company has since ventured into politics. In May, Coinbase’s crypto advocacy project, Stand With Crypto, announced it would begin formally endorsing crypto-friendly political candidates in the US Senate and House of Representatives.
