Solana gaming company MagicBlock, which has recently been favored by the well-known limelight company a16z, has developed new technology that can accelerate on-chain game processing. Due to the limited transaction processing speed on the chain, the gas fee charged is too high, and various factors make the game run slowly. To solve this problem, MagicBlock uses a technology called Ephemeral rollups to temporarily increase the processing capacity of the game engine in the L1 Solana chain.
Favored by a16z, MagicBlock is committed to optimizing the blockchain gaming experience
Solana gaming company MagicBlock has raised $3 million in a Pre-Seed round, including investment after being favored by the a16z accelerator. MagicBlock is currently a team of six and was established in September 2023 by founders Andrea Fortugno and Gabriele Picco. In a podcast, the two mentioned that because "the gaming experience on the chain is really bad", they wanted to solve this problem and founded MagicBlock.
Founder Fortugno said that although video games running on the blockchain have benefits such as decentralization, transparency, and security, and developers can also use the game’s smart contracts to create new features, etc., the shortcomings are quite obvious. It's a matter of "speed". He also said: "Players can't stand a delay of 100 milliseconds in the game, let alone half a second."
Therefore, MagicBlock developed Ephemeral rollups technology, unlike other blockchain game developers such as Ronin associated with Axie Infinity, which is compatible with L1 Ethereum sidechains, Immutable and Sonic blockchains running on L2. But MagicBlock wants to "expand additional capabilities or solve existing limitations (crash) on Solana's original basis." while avoiding dispersing L1's liquidity.
Ephemeral Rollups separate state and operation logic to keep transactions flexible
Ephemeral Rollups technology allows a sequencer to temporarily process transactions or change account status (balance), but the final result will not be immediately transmitted back to the main chain (Solana), but will be temporarily processed (transaction) outside the chain and then transmitted back to Main chain (Solana) settlement. Doing so allows transactions to be processed faster, while the final data is still securely recorded on the Solana blockchain.
MagicBlock said that this design can process transactions more flexibly because Solana separates the account status (balance) and operational logic, so that when the status is moved to ephemeral rollups for processing, the logic will not change. The transaction status can be processed in a temporary rollup and finally returned to the main chain to maintain system efficiency and consistency.
