Hanoi City Police have just issued a warning about a new scam involving virtual currency exchanges. According to information from the authorities, a serious scam happened to Ms. V. (50 years old, residing in Nam Tu Liem District, Hanoi) when she participated in investing in virtual currency on Bitforex.com.
Ms. V. was introduced to and joined the “Finance of the Times” group on social networks, where she received instructions on investing in virtual currency. Trusting the promises of the scammers, she transferred a total amount of up to 2.3 billion VND to invest.
However, when she tried to make a transaction to sell virtual currency, the system reported an error. The subjects then asked her to pay taxes, insurance premiums and other fees to be able to withdraw the money. She then discovered that she had been scammed and reported the incident to the police.
Hanoi police said that recently, many virtual currency trading floors have appeared with sophisticated scams. These floors often attract users by promising high interest rates and attractive profits. Initially, the floors create conditions for investors to earn interest to encourage more deposits. Then, they will ask for more deposits and refuse to withdraw capital, the ultimate goal is to appropriate assets.
To protect themselves from scams, Hanoi Police advise people not to invest or trade on virtual currency exchanges, digital currencies, websites, or applications related to virtual currencies. Virtual currency exchanges are not currently recognized by Vietnamese law and do not have a legal representative in Vietnam, leading to many risks for investors.
If fraud is detected, people should immediately notify the police to promptly investigate, prevent and handle it according to the provisions of law.
