Ron Paul, former US representative and presidential candidate, has argued that even when it comes to proposals from the highest levels of power, government efficiency is a paradox. Paul explains that government is impersonal and cannot be rationally economized, because its decisions are based on politics and can never be “efficient”.
Ron Paul Criticizes Proposed Musk-Led Efficiency Commission: Government Can Never Be Efficient
Ron Paul, former US presidential candidate and former US congressman, has offered his views on Trump’s recently proposed DOGE Commission on Government Efficiency, headed by Musk. On his show “Ron Paul’s Freedom Report,” Paul criticized the idea of efficiency when it comes to government, stressing that even when it comes from high-levels of power trying to solve problems, “government efficiency” is a contradiction.
Paul, a fierce critic of government spending and debt policies, argues that unlike individuals, governments cannot be efficient due to their own motives and considerations. To him, governments cannot be as frugal as individuals or corporations because their decisions are politically motivated, rather than based on profits and losses.
Additionally, Paul emphasized that the government has abilities that no one else has, such as tax collection, which he called taking money by force. Paul stated:
No individual or business has that ability. Unless, of course, they get the government to steal money on their behalf. But ordinary people and businesses can't just steal money and call it "revenue." So the government can never be "efficient."
However, Paul acknowledged that the government could be made smaller and less burdensome for citizens. In this regard, he pointed out that the current US federal government is the largest in the history of the world and that cutting its size “would not be too difficult to do.” According to USAFacts, there will be 2.95 million employees in the US federal workforce by the end of 2023, which is nearly 2% of the total workforce in the country.
