Google is now ramping up its control of generative AI to combat misinformation in the upcoming US presidential election, according to Techcrunch.

In response to the growing risk of misinformation due to the development of generative AI, Google has announced that it will impose restrictions on many of its AI products, including Gemini, Search AI Overviews, YouTube AI-generated summaries, Gems, and image generation in Gemini.

The move comes after Google became aware of potential flaws in its generative AI technology, especially when it comes to providing accurate information on sensitive issues like elections.

“For federal and state elections, people rely on us to provide reliable and up-to-date information on topics like current candidates, voting procedures, and election results – and this new technology can make mistakes as it learns or as new news emerges,” said Laurie Richardson, Google’s vice president of trust and safety.

Misinformation was already a significant problem in the 2020 presidential election, and with the rise of generative AI, it's expected to get worse in the 2024 election. Google is trying to tackle the problem before it gets worse.

In addition to limiting generative AI, Google is also upgrading its search and YouTube features to help users access trustworthy election information.

Google Search will get a feature to help find information about registering to vote, YouTube will provide trustworthy information about candidates and political parties, and Google Play has launched a new badge to identify apps from official government agencies.

Google's efforts show the important role technology companies play in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of information, especially during sensitive times like the US presidential election.

Regulating generative AI in politics is a necessary step to protect democracy and ensure fair and transparent elections.
