Malaysian authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal Bitcoin mining operations, focusing on those siphoning electricity. Recently, nearly 1,000 mining rigs were destroyed in Perak District, with a total value of approximately RM1.98 million ($452,500). The rigs were crushed using a steamroller as part of a court-ordered action against equipment seized in raids from 2022 to April 2024.
The Perak Tengah District Police chief confirmed that the destruction followed environmental regulations. Additionally, in Sepang District, seven individuals were arrested for illegal mining and electricity theft, with authorities seizing 52 mining rigs, laptops, phones, and vehicles valued at about RM250,000 ($57,000). Investigations are ongoing, and some suspects face court charges.
Malaysian authorities have been combating electricity theft in mining since 2018, with losses estimated at RM3.4 billion ($722 million) between 2018 and 2023. Energy companies have since improved methods for detecting unusual energy consumption.
