• A massive DDoS attack on X disrupted the platform, delaying a highly anticipated interview between Elon Musk and Donald Trump by 30 minutes.

  • Despite technical issues caused by the DDoS attack, 120,000 users successfully accessed the X Space where the Musk-Trump interview took place.

  • The delayed interview covered topics like illegal immigration and foreign relations, excluding mention of cryptocurrency or Bitcoin.

Elon Musk's X platform experienced technical difficulties on August 12, 2024, as it was hit by a distributed denial of service attack. The technical issued an interview between Musk and former U.S. President Donald Trump, initially scheduled to begin at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time.

Reported DDoS Attack Delays Interview Start

Musk posted on X to inform users of the situation through his account. A DDoS attack is a cyber plan designed to add a network with excessive traffic, preventing users from accessing the service. As a result of the attack, many X users reported being unable to join the live X Space where the interview was set to occur. Despite these issues, 120,000 users successfully interacted with the stream.

Before the interview, Musk mentioned that X had tested its system earlier in the day with 8 million concurrent listeners. However, when the event was supposed to go live, the platform displayed the stream as unavailable. Musk managed to start the interview 30 minutes later than planned, around 8:30 p.m. ET, and informed listeners that the session would proceed with fewer live participants. He also assured that the unedited audio would be available immediately after the event.

Interview Focus on Key Political Topics

During the conversation, Trump discussed various topics, including attempts on his life, illegal immigration, and U.S. foreign relations. He also criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, a candidate in the near presidential election.

Despite Trump’s known support for cryptocurrency and Musk’s endorsement of Dogecoin, the interview did not touch upon crypto related subjects. Before the interview, speculations on Polymarket, a prediction market platform, indicated a 56% likelihood that Trump would mention crypto or Bitcoin. However, as the interview progressed without mentioning cryptocurrency, the odds dropped to 1% before the event concluded.
