Solana is no longer popular?

When it comes to the best blockchain for decentralized physical infrastructure (DePIN), many people will definitely think of Solana first. As the biggest competitor of Ethereum ($ETH), Solana’s transaction speed, low cost and other factors , making it the first choice for many DePIN projects.

However, DePIN developer Chirp does not seem to think so. In an exclusive interview with foreign media, the company’s CEO Tim Kravchunovsky questioned the future of Solana and chose another public chain, Sui, as the company’s choice to develop the DePIN project. First choice.

DePIN developers reveal the reasons why it is difficult to use

In the past, some well-known DePIN projects, including Hivemapper and Helium, chose to build on Solana. However, Tim Kravchunovsky said that with in-depth research on Solana, they discovered some problems that cannot be ignored.

The most important thing that cannot be ignored is the "instability" of Solana's network. Looking back at 2022, Solana's network was interrupted almost every other month. Even after the Firedancer validator client went online, Solana was still interrupted for a while. There was an outage of nearly 5 hours.

In addition to frequent interruptions, Solana also faces scalability problems. Looking back at the Solana meme currency craze at the beginning of this year, when the whole country was crazy about meme trading, the Solana network was unable to load and became congested many times, and even transactions failed. Case.

Tim Kravchunovsky said that these problems are unacceptable for DePIN projects like Chirp that need to process large amounts of data in real time. For DePIN projects, the reliability and scalability of the blockchain are the two most important requirements.

Frankly admitting that "this kind of coin" is directly crushed

In this regard, Chirp chose Sui as the optimal solution. Sui was launched on May 3, 2023. Its design improved the blockchain architecture in the previous bull market and was closer to solving the blockchain trilemma (going centralization, scalability and security).

Tim Kravchunovsky pointed out that the reason why Sui was chosen as a solution is that the blockchain is better than Solana in three important aspects, including "efficient performance", "low network latency", "low cost", etc.

Sui has 100 globally distributed validators and uses the Move language to effectively ensure security. Its throughput ranges from 10,871 TPS to 297,000tps. The recently launched Mysticeti upgrade further improves network speed and reduces consensus latency by 80%. to 390 milliseconds, which is almost the same as Solana’s 400 millisecond latency.

At the same time, from a cost perspective, Sui’s average Gas fee in the past 30 days was only 0.003932633 $SUI (the current $SUI price is about 0.86 USD), but Solana’s average gas fee is as high as 0.03 USD, which is very important for large-scale DePIN For the project, this is a considerable cost savings.

Kravchunovsky bluntly stated that if there were early DePIN projects seeking advice, he would not hesitate to recommend Sui as the first choice. In comparison, although Solana is still competitive in some aspects, in the rapidly developing blockchain ecosystem, Innovation and improvement are still important issues that Solana needs to face urgently.
