According to Cointelegraph, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Commissioner Jaime Lizárraga announced that he would resign on January 17 because he wanted to spend more time with his wife who was suffering from cancer.

Lizárraga has worked at the SEC since the 1990s and served as a senior adviser to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on financial legislation, including the Dodd-Frank Act.

As a commissioner, he was involved in regulatory work on climate-related risk disclosures and cybersecurity and data breach disclosures.

Lizárraga’s departure comes on the heels of the upcoming departure of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, signaling a possible new phase for the SEC or a new perspective on key regulatory matters such as digital assets.
