According to CoinDesk, former Spanish central bank governor Pablo Hernández de Cos will serve as general manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) for a five-year term starting July 1, replacing Agustín Carstens.
The BIS, an organization owned by 63 central banks, has done a lot of work in the crypto space in recent years, working with several central banks on central bank digital currency projects to improve cross-border payments, privacy and anonymity, and advocating for a unified ledger.
Last year, Hernández de Cos said a digital euro could boost payments innovation. He also served as chairman of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision, which is expected to finalize global crypto banking rules in 2022.
The BIS board also re-elected Bank of France Governor François Villeroy de Galhau as chair, and Bank of Canada Governor Tiff Macklem will chair the Americas Advisory Council starting in January.
