Representative Rich McCormick introduced a resolution to the US Congress requesting that a Binance executive who has been detained in Nigeria since February be considered a hostage. McCormick claimed that the Nigerian government wrongfully detained Binance executive Tigran Gambaryan "for the purpose of blackmailing" and called on the US government to officially declare Gambaryan a hostage and ensure that the Nigerian government releases him and provides medical care if the situation is not resolved by mid-July.

The charges against Gambaryan initially came against Gambaryan and his colleague, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who were tried in February on tax evasion and money laundering charges after traveling to Nigeria as Binance representatives. Anjarwalla escaped custody in March and was reported to have fled to Kenya, but is expected to be extradited to Nigeria.

Gambaryan's wife, Yuki, started a petition to bring her husband back to the United States, and at the time of publication it was approaching the 5,000 signature goal. Yuki reported that she had been in contact with Binance staff and lawyers representing her husband in the money laundering case, but not with Nigerian government officials. “In my eyes, it is clear that any issue between Binance and Nigerian authorities can and should be resolved without Tigran getting in the middle of it,” Yuki told Cointelegraph.#Binance#Nigeria#Cryptocurrency
