What is RNDR? The full name of RNDR is RNDR Token. The issue date is 2017-10-01, the issue price is $0.25, and the maximum supply is 536,870,912RNDR. RNDR Token is a decentralized economic network that converts GPU computing power into 3D assets (such as graphics cards). The goal is to authorize the creation, sharing and monetization of any 3D object or environment through the Ethereum blockchain protocol. RNDR Token is powered by breakthrough cloud rendering technology, creating a distributed global network consisting of millions of peer-to-peer GPU devices.

RenderToken.com (RNDR®) is a high-performance distributed GPU rendering network built on OctaneRender®, the world’s fastest and most powerful GPU-accelerated, unbiased, physically correct renderer from OTOY Inc. The network facilitates a marketplace between computational and virtual asset (NFT) node operators and requesters.

OTOY’s Academy Award-winning technology is used by leading visual effects studios, artists, animators, designers, architects and engineers to deliver unprecedented creative freedom, new levels of realism and new economics in cloud-based content creation and distribution.

OTOY® was founded in 2008. Since then, the company has grown to over 60 employees across four offices with headquarters in Los Angeles, California. RNDR held a public token sale in October 2017. The RNDR network was launched and has been fully operational since April 2020.

OTOY, Inc. was first conceived in 2009 by founder and CEO Jules Urbach, RNDR is an ERC-20 compatible utility token used to pay for animation, motion graphics and VFX rendering on the distributed RNDR network. With OTOY's OctaneRender feature, the RNDR network is able to produce film-quality renders in a fraction of the time of traditional studio and artist timelines.

Users can register their workstations on the network, where they will earn RNDR tokens for work done. The rendering work is distributed across multiple computers running a simple client application, similar to Folding@home or SETI.

The tokens earned can later be used to fund rendering projects, all of which are encrypted on the network. Studios can also choose to use Tier 1 nodes on Microsoft Azure’s highly secure infrastructure for their network projects.

Our vision: a photon-driven economy

It is virtually impossible for independent artists or studios to track the media they create. Protecting assets after something has been stolen has become a process of tracing back through copyright and trademark laws. The current rendering business is too slow compared to the rapidly growing digital environment around the world.

Blockchain technology (hence RNDR) provides a three-point solution for content creators:

  • Rights protection (e.g. non-fungible tokens NFT)

  • Profit

  • Bringing power back to the individual

RNDR’s vision is to transform distributed GPU computing power into a decentralized economy of connected 3D assets, where any object or environment can be created, shared, remixed, and monetized through the blockchain. One of RNDR’s advisors, Brendan Eich (JavaScript creator, co-founder of Mozilla, creator of Brave and the BAT token), said: “This project will revolutionize the way 3D assets and their respective digital rights are transferred and distributed between people and entities. OTOY is transforming its state-of-the-art rendering expertise into a decentralized network to cater to a wider audience.” For creators, RNDR opens the way for creative works that have never been used in the industry. RNDR is also having a real-world, direct impact on industries across the media space. Ari Emanuel, co-CEO of Endeavor and RNDR Advisor, commented: “Entertainment, news, media, platforms, and payments will be revolutionized by blockchain,” adding that his goal is to drive “media through the RNDR network.”

Inspired by Life After Television (written in 1990 by OTOY advisory board member George Gilder), Jules Urbach lays out his vision, starting with the early days of the web and the subsequent economizing of non-fungible digital assets (NFTs) and authorship, for Life After Automation: The Rendering Economy:

“The first principle of the “render economy” is that the resonance of authentic human thought, creativity, and imagination is the fundamental unit of currency”

“The Render Token and the network it encompasses are designed to make this system viable early on. First, by bootstrapping the rendering economy in its early stages through significant cost savings in distributed rendering. Then, in subsequent stages, through the semantic web of value and authorship encoded on the blockchain itself.”

As of April 2020, the RNDR network has fully launched its rendering platform, which can be joined at know.rendertoken.com.
