33 terabytes of “relevant information containing American banking secrets” were allegedly disclosed

A notorious Russian hacking group claims to have hacked the US Federal Reserve.

Security researchers say that the LockBit ransomware group claims to have gained access to 33 terabytes of "current banking information containing Americans' bank secrets."

The group says it is holding the data hostage, demanding that the Federal Reserve pay a reward for keeping the information secret.

“You better hire another negotiator within 48 hours and fire this clinical idiot who values American bank secrecy at $50,000.”

The Fed has not issued a response to the claims or confirmed whether its infrastructure was breached.

Security experts say they reject LockBit's claims until the group posts evidence of the alleged hack online.

LockBit has carried out highly damaging cyberattacks on banks, governments and organizations for years, and the US State Department recently announced a multi-million dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in LockBit's operations.

“The Department of State is announcing a reward totaling up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of any individual involved in the LockBit ransomware attack...

Since January 2020, LockBit attackers have carried out more than 2,000 attacks on victims in the US and around the world, resulting in costly disruptions and the destruction or theft of sensitive information. More than $144 million in ransom was paid to recover from the events surrounding the LockBit extortion.”
