1. What is PEPE coin?

PEPE coin was born in April 2023. It was inspired by the 2005 web comic character Pepe The Frog and is a meme coin based on Ethereum.

Officials said that the original intention of PEPE coin was to get tired of dog-themed meme coins such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu coin, which deviated from the entertainment nature of meme coins due to complex token economics design. Therefore, PEPE aims to break these frameworks and become the king of meme coins, and borrowed the campaign slogan of former US President Trump to propose "Make meme coins great again."

2. Originated from the Internet meme culture Pepe the Frog

The image of Pepe the Frog comes from cartoonist Matt Furie, who said he deliberately chose a name close to the English word "pee" to make it more interesting.

Pepe the Frog first appeared in the 2005 web comic "Boys Club". As one of the four characters, he loves drinking and fooling around. Many of the inspirations and interesting jokes of the comic come from Matt Furie's daily life with his roommates and family.

Furie initially thought that this phenomenon was "whatever, it's funny", but he didn't expect things to get out of control. What really made Pepe the Frog popular was a scene in the comic: every time he peed, he would take off his pants and peed all over the toilet. He was caught by a friend and the friend added the text "Feel Good Man". From then on, Pepe the Frog became a meme on social media for secondary and tertiary creations. Furie originally thought that this phenomenon was "whatever, it's funny", but he didn't expect things to get out of control.

3. PEPE has become a hotbed of hatred

Pepe the Frog's darkening began with his appearance on the 4chan forum (4chan is a picture discussion board in the United States, the birthplace of many online memes, political movements, and cyber attacks). On 4chan, netizens transformed Pepe the Frog into the "Sad Frog", whose iconic features are tears in the eyes and red lips, and you can feel the sadness just by looking at the picture. Pepe the Frog became a symbol of many "excluded people" and "freaks", and this image made him quickly popular on the Internet.

Becoming popular should have been a good thing, but when Pepe the Frog was used outside of 4chan, 4chan users began to feel dissatisfied, thinking that Pepe the Frog had a sense of belonging. So, they maliciously changed the picture, combined Pepe the Frog with racism and Nazism to prevent outsiders from using it, and focused all the malicious jokes on Pepe the Frog, so that the seeds of hatred sprouted in him.

As things gradually got out of control, a shooting in a college town completely darkened Pepe the Frog. Images of Pepe the Frog and the murderer holding guns and driving luxury cars spread everywhere, and the accompanying text also crossed the line of "just a joke."
4. The author personally drew Pepe the Frog to death

Pepe the Frog was happy and innocent in 2005, but now Pepe the Frog is beyond Matt Furie's control. In a 2021 documentary, he said he was "very upset" that the frog he created would be abused and ruined by secular society. Heartbroken, he decided to kill Pepe the Frog with his own pen in 2017. The boys' club members in the comics also held a funeral for him, but this did not stop it from continuing to circulate on the Internet.

At the same time, Matt Furie is also working on the copyright of Pepe the Frog, which has been "maliciously abused." He hopes to work with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) to whitewash Pepe the Frog and make it a "force for good."

ADL CEO Greenblatt once said: "Pepe the Frog was never intended to be a symbol of hate. We will work with Furie and his team of artists to take Pepe the Frog back and make it a force for good, or at least help educate people about the dangers of prejudice and bigotry."
