Bitcoin billionaires Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss said on Thursday that they have jointly donated $2 million in Bitcoin to support former US President Donald Trump's presidential campaign.
The twin brothers, who co-founded cryptocurrency exchange Gemini and previously co-founded Facebook, donated a total of 30.94 BTC (15.47 BTC each). Gemini also announced Thursday that customers can now donate cryptocurrency to “pro-crypto” candidates.
“President Donald J. Trump is pro-Bitcoin, pro-crypto, and pro-business,” Tyler Winklevoss wrote on Twitter (X). “This is not a matter of debate. Anyone who says otherwise is seriously misinformed, delusional, or not telling the truth. It's time to take back our country.”
Winklevoss accused the Biden administration of using the federal government and banking system as a weapon against the crypto space, continuing policies first established with Operation Choke Point under the Obama administration, where Biden served as Vice President. He describes this as a “war against crypto.”
“This administration's actions are nothing short of an unprecedented abuse of power, used purely for twisted political purposes with no regard for innovation, American taxpayers, and the American economy. . There is nothing the Biden administration can do or say at this time to pretend otherwise.”
It's unclear where the money was sent because donation limits for candidates and political parties are much lower than the amount each person says they donated. It's likely they donated to pro-Trump political action committees (PACs), which are not subject to such restrictions but must operate independently of candidates' campaigns.
In May, Trump announced he was accepting donations in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies after a dinner at his Mar-a-Lago resort with people who owned Trump's NFTs.
That same month, analysts at UK-based Standard Chartered said a Trump victory in November would be good for Bitcoin. He has made similar comments since then about his desire to support cryptocurrencies in the United States and ensure that the Bitcoin mining industry can flourish in the country.
