Ethereum Pectra: A Groundbreaking Upgrade to Revolutionize Blockchain Security and Efficiency

Ethereum's upcoming Prague-Electra upgrade, known as Pectra, is being described by Galaxy Digital researcher Christine Kim as the most significant upgrade in Ethereum's history. This stands out due to its expected major impact on the operation and security of the platform and extensive code changes.

This follows the successful Dencun update in March 2023 and integrates various Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at improving cryptographic security, efficiency and scalability.

Kim details how these major changes will transform Ethereum's underlying protocols and usher in a new era of network performance.

Why is Ethereum Pectra Update Important?

The Pectra update, which follows the Dencun update in March 2023, stands out as the next important step for Ethereum. This update includes several critical EIPs that improve various aspects of the network, from cryptographic methods to overall system efficiency.

EIP-2537: This proposal aims to integrate operations for the BLS12-381 curve. This step is important to ensure strong cryptographic proofs and better compatibility with Ethereum's Beacon Chain.

EIP-2935: Developed by Vitalik Buterin and others, this proposal aims to store the last 8192 block hashes in system contract storage slots. This improves scalability by paving the way for stateless execution and Verkle trees upgrading.

EIP-7685: Managed by Lightclient, this EIP introduces a bus that allows EL (Execution Layer) triggered requests to communicate with CL (Consensus Layer). This improves code testing and deployment efficiency for consensus layer changes.
