Hackers attacked 1,500 banks and their clients, trying to empty accounts in 60 countries

Black hat hackers have reportedly distributed malware targeting more than 1,500 banks and their clients worldwide.

Security researchers at IBM say an updated version of the Grandoreiro banking trojan has just been released, allowing attackers to carry out bank fraud in 60 countries.

The malware allows attackers to send email notifications that appear to be urgent government requests for payment.

Users are told that they can click a link to view a bill or fee, and when they do so, a malicious file is downloaded and executed in the background.

Once installed, the malware searches for banking applications and interacts with them to facilitate fraudulent transactions.

The keystrokes of infected users are also logged and their screens are captured to obtain banking credentials, usernames and other sensitive data needed to hack and leak accounts.

“[The malware] allows attackers to carry out bank fraud in more than 60 countries, including regions in Central and South America, Africa, Europe and the Indo-Pacific.

While campaigns have traditionally been limited to Latin America, Spain and Portugal, X-Force has observed recent campaigns impersonating the Mexican Tax Administration Service (SAT), the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), the Mexican Minister of Administration and Finance, the Argentine Revenue Service, and especially the South African Revenue Service (SARS)…

Malware updates, as well as significant growth in banking apps in several countries, indicate that Grandoreiro distributors are looking to campaign and deliver malware on a global scale.”
