The Dfinity Foundation said in a statement that it is launching a new API that will allow Internet Computer smart contracts to read and write on any ethereum virtual machine.

“Internet Computer smart contracts can now communicate with any EVM chain, which means dapps can benefit from cross-chain liquidity, merged communities, and simplified API key handling,” said Lomesh Dutta, vice president of growth at the Dfinity Foundation, in a statement. “We’ve added Optimism, Arbitrum, and Base, but anyone can add other EVMs at any time.”

Dutta added that ICC smart contracts are already working with Bitcoin and Ethereum on projects such as Bioniq, Bitfinity and Omnity.

The move, which is intended to further improve interoperability between the Internet Computer and other blockchains, is part of the Chain Fusion initiative of the Dfinity Foundation, a major contributor to the Internet Computer protocol. The Internet Computer will soon be able to interact with the Solana blockchain as well, according to a statement.

Dominic Williams, chief scientist and founder of the Dfinity Foundation, believes that the Internet Computer is the "only third-generation" blockchain that can power a new internet era in which all online activity takes place entirely on-chain.
