AGI (artificial general intelligence) - a universal AI capable of performing mental work at the human level, has not yet left the pages of science fiction and philosophical treatises. Even the coolest neural networks GPT-4 and PaLM, which cope with many intellectual tasks, are not like this. The researchers note that only individual elements (“sparks”) of general AI are observed in them.
Nevertheless, advances in science in the field of neural networks allow us to hope that universal intelligence will appear soon. According to the most optimistic forecasts, this could happen in a few years - when one of the next generation language models is released.
Elon Musk recently made a stunning prediction about the future of artificial intelligence. He believes that AGI will be created very soon and will be "smarter than the smartest person in everything" and will be able to "write a book as good as J.K. Rowling, discover new physics or invent new technologies."
Musk believes this new reality is less than three years away. Musk's tweet was shared by Rowan Cheung, a journalist and author of the newsletter about AI "The Rundown AI".
