The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA), the European Union's security watchdog, is mooting the idea of incorporating cryptocurrencies into its massive twelve-trillion-euro capital market. ESMA approached industry professionals to hear their views on whether Undertakings for Collective Investment in Transferable Securities (UCITS) could include various asset classes.
These asset classes include crypto assets, commodities, structured loans, emissions allowances, catastrophe bonds and individual stocks.
Mutual funds, exchange-traded funds and money market funds are included in the UCITS category, which are special types of investment funds designed to simplify and protect investment transactions. Although these funds are subject to EU law, investors from outside the EU can participate in these funds.
Unlike spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that focus entirely on cryptocurrency, UCITS investments include a wide range of fund types, each with their own asset allocation based on risk profiles. If authorized, it is highly unlikely that there will be independent UCITS funds that allocate 100 percent of their assets to cryptocurrency. Instead, many UCITS funds will likely invest a percentage of their assets in cryptocurrency.
This decision by the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) coincides with the recent licensing of exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for spot Bitcoin in both the United States and Hong Kong. It appears that regulators around the world are increasingly receptive to the idea of expanding exposure to cryptocurrencies to more traditional investment avenues.
