On June 21, the official Twitter account of Bored Ape Yacht Club released a promotional video about the new game “HV-MTL Forge” and revealed that the game will be officially launched on June 29.

"HV-MTL Forge" is a space construction game centered around Yuga Labs' latest mecha NFT series HV-MTL. Players holding HV-MTL can access and participate, build or customize an exclusive special space in the game, and upgrade their HV-MTL to a new form through the game.

On the evening of June 28, the night before the launch of “HV-MTL Forge”, Yuga Labs co-founder Garge.eth posted a long article on his personal Twitter, talking about the game, the earlier “Dookey Dash”, and some of his thoughts on Yuga Labs’ game development plans.

The following is the full text of Garge.eth, compiled by Odaily Planet Daily.

“HV-MTL Forge” will be released tomorrow, and before that I would like to do some in-depth thinking about HV-MTL.

Two years ago, the summer after BAYC launched, GordonGoner.eth (Yuga Labs’ other co-founder) and I had an idea for an old-school arcade game that was psychedelic and dark. We were pretty excited about it.

Today, although we didn’t implement it in the end, we still hope that some of the ideas we had at the beginning can become a reality one day. However, even if the original idea was shelved, some of the design concepts of the game have always been with us: for example, we can make a game that is almost impossible to pass; for example, players only have a limited number of games; for example, each player will receive a unique NFT character reward based on their position on the final leaderboard.

We wanted it to feel like it was only going to run on one old-school arcade machine, which was probably going to die in a week, so players only had about a week to play it.

However, if you perform well, you will have the opportunity to obtain a unique character through the game. This character can be brought out of the game, which will serve as proof of your participation in the game, show your style in the game (such as rare characteristics to prove that you have achieved a good ranking), and will become your key to participate in the next limited-time game.

This idea interests us because it demonstrates in a very simple way the potential of NFTs for gaming, such as ownership confirmation, verifiable scarcity, new eSports models, and more.

And most importantly, the idea highlights a unique potential of NFTs — that as a game ends, parts of it (like an on-chain character) can continue to exist, rather than disappearing when the game servers are shut down.

Note: Web 2 gamers may have deep feelings about this. For example, after the Chinese server of World of Warcraft was shut down at the beginning of the year, many players had to say goodbye to the game characters that had accompanied them for a long time.

So, how can we better demonstrate the potential of NFT? Our answer is to use a new game to connect the previous game, and players can use these characters again in the new game. Through different designs, players can either start again from where they left off, or immerse themselves in a new and different experience.

The continuation of these "mini-games" will eventually be upgraded into a series of blockbuster-like experiences, and this experience will become richer because of the emotions that players put into the journey.

The early Dookey Dash was born out of this idea. It is adapted from popular parkour games such as Temple Run, where players need to compete in the sewers to be the first to reach the end of the tunnel, where there is a magic key stuck in the monkey's butt waiting for you to pull it out.

Dookey Dash was only open for a few weeks. In the end, our champion was Mongraal, a professional Fortnite player with super reflexes. Mongraal and all other users who participated in Dookey Dash received a small mech NFT, our HV-MTL. There are 8 different types of HV-MTL, corresponding to different leaderboard positions.

These HV-MTLs are currently in the Evlo1 state, in short, they are still little kids.

“HV-MTL Forge” will be our way to upgrade HV-MTL from Evlo1 form to the next form. In this new game, you don’t need to have extremely fast reaction ability like in “Dookey Dash”. The space of “HV-MTL Forge” is full of creativity, sociality and fun. This is the design direction of the new game. You can relax while competing.

HV-MTL Forge will initially be a mix of a pet game and a casual world-building game, but will then evolve into a dungeon crawler. Unlike Dookey Dash, HV-MTL Forge will be open for a few months but will eventually close.

I’m excited to see what you can build in the HV-MTL Forge. Let’s dive into the cracks in time and space together.

For those who can’t wait, Yuga Labs has put together a game guide (https://hv-mtl.com/forge-game-guide) and FAQ page (https://hv-mtl.com/forge-faq), and will also be releasing some video content ahead of tomorrow’s release.
