A trader lost $800,000 in cryptocurrencies due to a malicious extension on Google Chrome.
An anonymous cryptocurrency trader, using the name “Sell When Over” on the X platform, reported a financial loss estimated at $800,000 as a result of being attacked after installing malicious extensions on the Google Chrome browser.
This trader issued a warning via a post on Cryptocurrency wallet accessories.
The victim, who had repeatedly postponed browser updates, experienced a mandatory Windows update that resulted in a system reboot, disappearance of all tabs, and login reset for Google-based extensions.
After the incident, the victim had to re-enter all credentials and import cryptocurrency wallet seed phrases from a secure device.
The keylogger is suspected to have managed to drain funds after accessing sensitive information.
Malicious add-ons including the “Beta Sync Test” and “Simple Game” extensions as well as the browser’s automatic Korean translation setting have been identified as potential sources of the threat, with the former suspected to act as a keylogger and the latter monitoring tab activities and communicating with an external site.
The victim warned that lax caution could cost huge sums of money and stressed the importance of a thorough security check when confronted with any unusual behavior, especially when requesting to re-enter sensitive information.
The latest updates indicate that the stolen funds were transferred to international trading platforms, including the MEXC platform in Singapore and Gate.io in the Cayman Islands, which confirms the need for caution when using add-ons and updates to the Internet browser. #miharba 84179152 :ID
