A lone miner mined a block of Bitcoin and received a reward of $422,750

On April 5, 2024, an interesting incident was recorded in the cryptocurrency space. A lone miner, whose equipment had a modest computing power of 7 PH/s, was able to independently generate block #837,814 and add it to the Bitcoin blockchain. This news was announced by the head of the CKPool mining pool, Con Kolivas.

According to Kolivas, this miner has been working intermittently since the last restart of the pool and has managed to accumulate approximately 1/20 of the shares required to successfully solve a block. According to BTC.com, the miner received a reward of 6.25 BTC (equivalent to approximately $422,750 at the time of publication) and an additional commission of 0.01 BTC.

The miner independently contacted Kolivas and said that he used his own equipment to mine Bitcoin, but periodically resorted to renting additional capacity.

According to data from the analytical platform Glassnode, the total computing power of the Bitcoin network on April 4 was 598.1 EH/s (the figure was smoothed using a seven-day moving average).

There have been cases in the past where a single miner successfully mined an entire block of Bitcoin. The head of the CKPool pool has repeatedly reported on similar precedents. For example, in October 2023, a solo miner with equipment with a capacity of 11 PH/s added a block to the Bitcoin network, and in May another miner earned $177,115 by independently generating a block.
