There have been speculations that The Open Network (TON), HashKey and Oyster Labs have teamed up to launch a new smartphone, dubbed the “Universal Basic Smartphone”.

Robert Lee, co-founder of web3 event service Web3Convention, posted a tweet capturing the final stage of the TON Blockchain Hackathon, TON Hacker House, held on April 4 in Hong Kong. This event brings together 100 programmers with more than 20 innovative projects to compete for technical consulting, financial grants, and the opportunity to share a total prize pool of up to $1.5 million.

The snapshot shows a presentation slide introducing the “Universal Basic Smartphone” and a price of $99. The slide lists some of the phone's specifications, including an 8-core processor, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage, USB-C input, and a 4050mAh lithium-ion battery.

Lee said he bought “a TON mobile phone on the spot to try it out and showed off a photo taken with the “TON phone Creator.”

After the rumors spread, many users commented on TON's official account, questioning the authenticity of the information in a recent event post.

There is now a preorder page for the new phone. However, at the time of writing, the website appears to be unfinished and the “Privacy” and “Terms” buttons are unresponsive.

Additionally, an admin in the Telegram group said to be involved in the initiative stated that the official preorder launch will take place on April 8.
