The Litecoin halving is a deflationary event that may cause Litecoin price to rise. However, it is important to remember that the price of Litecoin is affected by a variety of factors, and there is no guarantee that the price of Litecoin will increase after the halving.

After the next halving, mining rewards will be reduced from 6.25 LTC per block to 3.125 LTC per block.

What is Litecoin Halving?

The Litecoin halving is a recurring event that occurs approximately every four years on the Litecoin network. The event was specifically written into the Litecoin protocol and had a significant impact on the supply of the cryptocurrency and the rewards miners received.

During the Litecoin halving, the amount of LTC mined per block was reduced by half. In other words, the reward a miner receives for successfully validating a transaction is cut in half. The reduction in block rewards is intended to control Litecoin’s inflation rate and create predictable scarcity similar to precious metals like gold.

Litecoin Halving Date History

Litecoin’s first halving occurred in 2015, when the block reward was reduced from 50 LTC per block to 25 LTC per block. The second halving occurred in 2019, when the block reward was reduced from 25 LTC per block to 12.5 LTC per block.

In the sections below, we will examine LTC’s price action before and after each halving. But before we get started, here are the past and projected future Litecoin halving dates.

Litecoin’s first halving (August 25, 2015)

Litecoin’s first halving occurred in 2015, approximately 4 years after the mainnet launch in 2011. In the months leading up to the first halving, Litecoin’s price rose dramatically, rising from $1.40 in May 2015 to a peak of $8.73 in July. However, the price retreated in the weeks leading up to the halving and eventually fell to $3.05 on the day of the halving, allowing investors to purchase Litecoin at a significant discount from just a few weeks earlier.

Three months before Litecoin’s second halving in August 2019, Litecoin was changing hands for around $75. Prices rose significantly in June, peaking at $142. However, like the first halving, the price of LTC dropped in the weeks leading up to the second halving, eventually settling at around $105 on the day of the halving.

The third Litecoin halving (August 2, 2023)

In August 2023, three months before Litecoin’s third halving, Litecoin was trading at around $88. During the actual halving, the LTC market saw considerable volatility, with prices rising as high as $114 and falling as low as $72.

Litecoin’s pre-halving rally peaked on July 3, almost exactly one month before the halving. After peaking at $114, the price of Litecoin dropped steadily all the way up to the halving, which occurred when LTC changed hands at around $93.

After the halving, the value of Litecoin continued to fall, falling below the $80 mark two weeks after the halving.

What will happen after Litecoin halving? LTC halving predictions

If historical price data is any indication, Litecoin’s value may fall after the next halving. In the previous three halvings, Litecoin’s price rose in the months leading up to the halving, eventually falling in the weeks leading up to the halving, and continued its short-term decline after the halving.

Litecoin’s price is also expected to fall after the next halving in 2027. Of course, four years is an eternity in the cryptocurrency market. The Litecoin market may change significantly between now and the expected Litecoin halving date in July 2027.

It's important to note that past price movements should not be considered an indicator of future performance. While they can help us gain insight into market trends, we should take them with a grain of salt.

In which year will the Litecoin halving stop?

The last Litecoin halving event is expected to occur in 2143 at block height 27,720,000. At that time, the mining reward will be reduced to 0.00000000582 LTC. After the last halving, miners were not rewarded for mining new blocks and could only secure the network by supporting proof-of-work (PoW) consensus operations.

Coincidentally, the last Bitcoin will also be mined around the same time, with current predictions pointing to 2141 as the likely date when the last Bitcoin will be mined.

Bottom line: The next Litecoin halving is expected to occur in July 2027

The next Litecoin halving is still years away, so it’s difficult to predict LTC’s price action. So far, we have seen that Litecoin tends to rise before the halving and enter a bearish period after the halving.

Meanwhile, the next Bitcoin halving is expected to occur in April 2024, with the block reward dropping from 6.25 LTC to 3.125 LTC.
