According to Cointelegraph, the rare Ape-themed CryptoPunk#6915was sold for 620 ETH (about $1.48 million) on September 5. The NFT is one of only 24 Ape-themed CryptoPunks and has three unique attributes: a hat, earrings, and an eye mask.
Despite the million-dollar sale, the NFT received higher bids earlier this year. In March, when NFT sales for the month were around $1.6 billion, Punk#6915was quoted between $5 million and $6 million.
This means the NFT’s value has fallen 78% since March.
The community had mixed reactions to the CryptoPunk sale, with some community members calling it “weird” to reject a higher offer, while others thought it was “crazy” to spend $1.5 million on a CryptoPunk in 2024.
At the same time, some community members believe that this is a wash sale, believing that a large number of NFT sales are "insiders trying to create some kind of hype." Wash sales are intended to deceive market participants about asset prices or liquidity.
On August 19, CryptoPunk#5822changed hands. The former owner said on X that it was "the end of an era", and on-chain data showed that the NFT was transferred to a different wallet. The NFT investor did not disclose the transaction details, and the community speculated that it might be sold at a loss.
In August, monthly NFT sales hit a new low since 2024, falling below $400 million for the first time. Data shows that sales of digital collectibles fell 76% from the highest monthly sales in 2024.
