According to Cointelegraph, blockchain security company Blockaid revealed that the notorious crypto phishing toolkit Angel Drainer has launched a new version, AngelX, which has deployed hundreds of malicious applications.
In a statement on September 4, Blockaid said that the AngelX system had deployed 300 malicious decentralized applications (DApps) aimed at stealing crypto users’ digital assets.
One of the worrying features of AngelX is its escalating support for phishing applications that target newer, less mature blockchains such as The Open Network (TON) and Tron.
Blockaid also detected more than 150 new scams since the AngelX system launched on August 31.
The AngelX system has an extremely high “evasion rate”, with many malicious applications able to evade detection by other cryptographic security vendors.
The system also features an upgraded user experience (UX) and control panel, making it easier for scammers to create highly customizable scam applications on a wider range of blockchains.
Blockaid said its early detection of AngelX’s system helped the company protect about $400,000 in assets in its first five days of operation.
Angel Drainer ceased most operations on July 16 after its developers realized their identities may have been compromised. Security analysts estimate that the Angel Drainer phishing scam has stolen around $25 million in crypto assets.
