The East African country of Tanzania has restricted access to social media platform X, ChainCatcher reported. Network observation organization Netblocks confirmed the ongoing outage.
Meanwhile, police sounded an alert that opposition parties were planning to attack police stations. Politician Tundu Lissu and four other opposition officials from the Chadema party were arrested in Tanzania.
Tanzanian police warned Chadema members who organized protests via Zoom that the meetings were being used to plan small-scale attacks. Tanzanians used virtual private networks to access X and voice their discontent. Last year, the government considered introducing a compulsory license for the use of virtual private networks.
