Young man spends 10 years "digging through trash" to find 8,000 Bitcoins, the result... still lost everything!
In 2013, James Howells, a British IT engineer, accidentally threw away a hard drive containing 8,000 BTC – currently worth about $740M. This Bitcoin was mined by him in 2009, a time when owning BTC only cost electricity.
Since then, James has dedicated his entire life just to “digging through trash, looking for BTC.” He hired a lawyer, called on investors, promised to share the value if he found the hard drive, and even planned to use AI to search the landfill without affecting the local residents.
However, the Newport city government has repeatedly denied James's request to search the landfill due to environmental concerns. Undeterred, James took his case to court, but recently, the court dismissed his lawsuit, officially ending the journey of "digging through trash for BTC."
A hard lesson for everyone: Backup your private key carefully! Don't let this “720 million USD lesson” repeat.
