Eight years ago, a classmate fell seriously ill, and the costs were said to be around three to four hundred thousand. Donations were initiated in the class group, and everyone contributed to varying degrees. I also donated 1,000 yuan.
When we were in school, our relationship was fairly good. During his hospitalization, a few of us went to visit him once. During our conversation, he said that the funds he raised were still not enough for the upcoming treatment costs. I asked him how much more he needed. He said he needed around 50,000 more.
We helped him raise the 50,000 and transferred it to him. He insisted on writing us an IOU, saying that once he recovered, he would definitely pay us back.
On the way back, we all felt a deep sense of reflection, saying that the money was given and that was it. Even if he recovered, he wouldn’t be able to do any heavy work. It would be good enough if he could live his life well; we shouldn’t expect him to pay us back.
I thought the same way. When we were raising money, I figured it would definitely not be repayable, but seeing his condition, I still wanted to help him out.
Later, the classmate's illness didn’t improve, and he passed away. We attended his funeral. At that time, his son was still very young, around four or five years old. His wife was weak, and his parents were old. The pillar of the family was gone, and it looked very heartbreaking.
After returning, I don’t know how I stumbled upon the IOU written by my classmate. I read it carefully, and with a heavy heart, I tore it up. I knew that this money was unlikely to be paid back.
More than a year later, on social media, I started receiving transfers of three to five hundred and seven to eight hundred, with messages bearing my classmate’s name. I found it very strange and asked the sender who they were. No one replied, and I tried to return the transfers several times, but they were all sent back to me.
Until a few days ago, when I initially helped my classmate raise money, I contributed 13,000 yuan. This 13,000 yuan has been repaid to me after eight long years.
Out of curiosity, I asked several classmates and learned that my classmate’s wife had been gradually repaying the debt he owed. Since it was quite a lot, she would repay a little here and a little there whenever she had money, so that others would know that someone was repaying these debts.
I suddenly felt a bit moved. This woman was thin and frail, but I didn’t expect her to have such good character.
May good people be rewarded and have peace for a lifetime 🙏
