2024 is officially the year of the degens. CoinGecko's traffic analysis shows that meme coins have attracted 31% of investor interest. This means that for every three users, one prefers DOGE and PEPE over BTC.

Solana, hosting tokens like BONK, WIF, POPCAT, and PNUT, still dominates the space. Base is the runner-up with a meme coin market capitalization of $2.6 billion. Other cryptocurrency trends this year include AI (who would have guessed), real-world assets (RWA), gaming, and Layer 2 solutions.

Cats Over Dogs, Memes Over NFTs

The broader 'meme coin' narrative accounts for 14.36% of user attention on CoinGecko. The Solana meme coin is the fourth most hyped, accounting for 7.65% of the attention, while the Base meme coin fell to the bottom of the list with 2.13%.

It's amazing, cats have beaten dogs and frogs—talk about man's best friend! While dog meme coins proudly have a market capitalization of $74 billion, tokens like POPCAT, MOG, PURR, and MEW have sparked the curiosity of degens this year.

But not all investors are focused on speculative assets promising quick riches. The story of AI ranks second, followed by RWA and the Solana ecosystem in general. Base, Sui, and TON networks have also caught the community's attention, as reflected in the performance of BASE, SUI, and TON tokens.

Last year, the hottest topic was AI. The Solana ecosystem was also trending, unlike Base, Sui, and TON which didn’t make the top 20. NFTs have become outdated—the novelty of owning a pixel monkey portrait with no utility quickly faded.

In fact, 96% of NFTs are now 'dead'. No transactions or social media activity. We are drawn in and shocked (not really).
