Ether is showing signs of breaking out compared to Bitcoin in January 2025, according to insights from a cryptocurrency analyst.
At the time of writing, the relative strength ratio of Ether compared to Bitcoin (ETH/BTC) is currently at 0.0356. Michael van de Poppe, founder of MN Capital, shared on December 24 that he 'would not be surprised if the ETH/BTC ratio surpasses 0.04 in January.'
The strength of ETH could trigger an 'altcoin run'
The last time the ETH/BTC ratio hit 0.04 was on December 8, when the price of Ether traded above the psychological level of $4,000.
Van de Poppe predicts that capital will continue to flow into Ether in January 2025, while Bitcoin may see capital outflows, causing Bitcoin prices to stagnate. He noted that this shift could trigger an 'altcoin run' in the Ethereum ecosystem.

In the past 24 hours, Shiba Inu (SHIB) and Mantle (MNT) – the second and third largest tokens in the Ethereum ecosystem outside of stablecoins – have increased by 7.1% and 3.32%, respectively.
Meanwhile, Bitcoin prices remain below the $100,000 mark after first reaching the six-figure milestone on December 5.
Analysts are paying attention to the strong performance of the Ether ETF
Some analysts believe that spot Ether ETFs are likely to outperform Bitcoin ETFs in 2025.
Nate Geraci, President of ETF Store, shared that 'the net inflow into ETH ETF is currently equivalent to gold ETFs, but I expect inflows to increase significantly from here.'
Ethereum and the opportunity for a strong comeback in 2025
Anonymous trader Brent also agrees, writing on X that 'ETH is one of the most undervalued assets in the world. Just imagine what would happen when a ball is submerged underwater.'
These comments come shortly after another cryptocurrency analyst suggested that the period of Ether underperforming compared to Bitcoin may have ended.
Benjamin Cowen, founder of Into The Cryptoverse, wrote on X on December 4 that he believes 'the decline of the ETH/BTC ratio has ended (or is nearly over), and this ratio will increase in the next 6-12 months.'
