Odaily Planet Daily reported that the Italian data protection agency fined OpenAI $15.7 million after conducting an investigation into data collection practices related to its flagship artificial intelligence model, and ordered the ChatGPT manufacturer to carry out a six-month public awareness campaign. The Italian Data Protection Authority (IDPA, also known as Garante) stated in a release on December 20 that its investigation found OpenAI did not notify the agency about a data breach that occurred in March 2023. The supervisory authority claimed that OpenAI also 'processed users' personal data' to train the chatbot but failed to first establish a 'sufficient legal basis' for that action, violating the 'principle of transparency and obligations to provide relevant information to users.'
