This week, as the price of bitcoin skyrocketed to a record level of $108,364, Didi Taihuttu, the Dutch man famous for selling his house and nearly all of his possessions for bitcoin (BTC) in 2017, shared a social media post reflecting on this decision.

From $300,000 to $10 million: How a family's 'risky' decision changed everything

The world first learned about Taihuttu's bold move in October 2017, when Bitcoin.com News reported on his story. At that time, Taihuttu admitted that many called him 'crazy,' but he quickly defended his choice. 'We are a family that loves adventure and will take a little bet to live a minimalist life. If you never take risks, life will be very boring,' Taihuttu explained at the time.

On December 17, 2024, Taihuttu jumped on X to share his wild story, reflecting on the bold move he made years ago and how it has paid off tremendously. 'We sold our $300,000 house in 2017 for 100 bitcoin,' he said. 'We could buy back that house that is now worth $400,000 with 4 bitcoin.'

If we had kept $300,000 in a bank account since 2017, we wouldn't have been able to buy back the house. That's the difference of BTC.

With the price of bitcoin at $100,000, 100 BTC today is worth up to $10 million. To give you an idea, if Taihuttu kept all his satoshis, he could buy 25 houses priced at $400,000 each. However, the journey of keeping the entire Taihuttu family's wealth in cryptocurrency has not been smooth. After surpassing $60,000 in 2021, BTC then dropped to $17,000 after the collapse of FTX at the end of 2022.

During that chaotic period, Taihuttu revealed plans to transfer $1 million in cryptocurrency to decentralized exchange (dex) platforms. A year before FTX collapsed in 2022, he told the press that he was allocating his family's cryptocurrency funds across multiple countries using cold storage. Taihuttu's story is a testament to the power of belief and adaptability in the face of financial instability. His willingness to take risks and pivot during tough times highlights a mindset that values long-term vision over short-term setbacks.

For Taihuttu and his family, bitcoin is not just an investment; it has become a lifestyle formed by a belief in the future of decentralized assets. As bitcoin continues to make headlines, Taihuttu's journey serves as a unique case study of bold decision-making and financial vision.
