Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that she will be stepping down from her position after being offered a different role within the government. In a December 16th post, Freeland explained that she had resigned her position as finance minister due to differences in policy between herself and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, specifically regarding potential tariffs that President-elect Donald Trump has threatened to impose on Canada.
Freeland emphasized the importance of taking this threat seriously and avoiding political gimmicks. She has served as Trudeau’s deputy prime minister since 2019 and finance minister since 2020. Freeland also defended the government’s handling of freezing crypto and fiat donations to Canadian truckers who blocked streets in Ottawa in 2022 in protest of COVID-19 restrictions.
