What would happen if the Earth stopped rotating?

If our Earth stopped rotating but the atmosphere continued to move, chaos would erupt. Winds traveling at thousands of miles per hour would flatten everything in minutes. Hiding in a subway tunnel might temporarily save you, but the ensuing heat would make survival a fleeting hope. The weather would become violent, with raging winds, thick fog, and extreme temperature fluctuations.

A day would turn into a year, with six months of scorching heat and six months of cold darkness. As if that weren't bad enough, the Moon would slowly move closer to us in an attempt to restore balance, but in short: nothing on Earth could or would survive.
