Bitcoin plummets, over 570,000 liquidations highlight risks in the virtual currency market
In the early hours of December 10, Bitcoin's price suddenly plummeted, causing significant turbulence in the cryptocurrency market. According to Coinglass data, over the past 24 hours, 574,000 liquidations occurred, with a total liquidation amount of $1.725 billion across all contracts, of which Bitcoin liquidations totaled $184 million and Ethereum liquidations totaled $243 million.
Around 5 AM that day, Bitcoin's price rapidly fell, briefly touching $94,000, though it later rebounded to above $97,600. Nevertheless, this sudden drop left many investors severely impacted. Data shows that long positions experienced liquidations amounting to $1.56 billion, while short positions saw liquidations of $170 million, indicating that the significant market volatility spared neither bullish nor bearish investors.
This incident of Bitcoin's sharp drop and the large number of investor liquidations once again underscores the high risks of the virtual currency market. First, the virtual currency market itself has a high degree of volatility, making price fluctuations often unpredictable. For instance, this year, while Bitcoin's price had seen significant highs, it also experienced several major declines, such as from the evening of November 25 to the early hours of November 26, when Bitcoin's price fell over 6% in just a few hours, resulting in over 170,000 liquidations.
Secondly, high leverage speculation is a significant amplifier of risks in the virtual currency market. When market sentiment is high, many investors tend to use high-leverage tools in pursuit of greater returns. However, once the market trend goes against expectations, the risks of high-leverage accounts can accumulate rapidly, leading to large-scale liquidation events and causing investors to lose their capital.
Furthermore, the virtual currency market faces many other risk factors. From an external environment perspective, changes in the global economic situation, geopolitical instability, and other factors can impact the virtual currency market. For example, fluctuations in U.S. economic data and significant declines in global capital markets can trigger investors' risk-averse sentiments, thereby increasing sell-off pressures in the virtual currency market.
